Objects of Desire by Penny Grennan

Penny Grennan: Artist’s statement

Penny Grennan is a painter whose work considers our relationship to objects, with particular reference to memory, narrative and form: all of which may be singular or partial.
She often plays with notions of value by painting cheap or common objects in oil, on canvas or linen, thereby drawing on centuries of still life tradition.
Her PhD thesis was called: “Your Trash, my treasure: an assessment of the value of souvenirs” and this continues to inform her practice.
The other strand of her work is the partial view of the day to day, such as looking through, looking down and expanding small details, such as folds in cloth and other commonplace objects.

Penny lives in Hexham, Northumberland and is a member of The Drawing Collective.
Penny has shown in London, Newcastle, Boston Spa, Hexham, Oxford and Japan
