Chris Brook – Artist Statement:

I am intrigued by the partially revealed, and our innate ability to extract information from the eroded remnants which remain, traces offering insight into a tangible connection, in both an historical and aesthetic sense. Both my paintings and sculptural works are inextricably linked through their use of materials, mark making, and preoccupation of subject matter, the elemental effect of time, and the fragility and preservation of time worn surfaces. Mark making is paramount throughout my work, obscured symbols and altered text offer a universal linguistic affinity, while an overlaid colour palette allow the works to be read as a whole. The symbiosis of fragility offering permanence draws on the practice of “make do and mend” In that nothing is broken, it just requires repair, and additional evidence of repair as in the Japanese art of Kintsugi and Boro is to be valued through extending the life and purpose of something. Mending and preserving are attributes which feature throughout my work, joining and fixing small artworks together to form a new whole, with visible fastenings becoming an increasingly integral part.
