Work of Romey Chaffer
Romey Chaffer – Artist Statement:
Most of my work begins with making drawings and paintings in the woods and valleys near my home in County Durham. Since moving to County Durham in 1980 after completing a Fine Art Degree at Sunderland, I have witnessed the landscape recovering from its industrial past. I like to immerse myself in the landscape, sitting amongst the hawthorns and heather, visually picking out the rhythms created by random forms and shapes. Sometimes photographs add to the source material. These beginnings are worked on in the studio at different scales and in a variety of media.
I was a founder member of Bearpark Artists Co-op (1993) and worked in schools, made murals in the health sector and ran workshops in the North East and Europe. Over the years I have exhibited my own work regularly in the North of England.
