Clare Money: Artist Statement

My work has always been about places, not remote locations alien to me but known
spaces that I revisit often.
Over the past thirty years I have worked in a variety of forms and have produced
drawings, paintings as well as more conceptual pieces that investigate and question
ideas of place.
I will walk, photograph and sketch multiple times in order to understand the nature of
the locations that my work seeks to connect with. Drawing in situ provides an intense
experience of the surroundings.By sitting still and absorbing all that is there, allowing
the place to come to you rather than seeking out any aspect with a particular
agenda, the artist makes particular and profound connections.
The work exhibited here is inspired by Holywell Dene, a woodland area close to my
home.

Biography

Clare Money is a visual artist based in the North East of England
After graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 1991 with a BA (Hons) in Drawing
and Painting, she went on to do a P.G.C.E in Secondary Art at Manchester
Polytechnic. Over the past thirty years, she has made a career out of combining the
development of her own practice with teaching art in various forms.
In 2010 Clare returned to academic studies and studied for an MA in Fine Art at
Northumbria University. Following this she continued her research through part time
study and completed a PhD in 2019, entitled
‘X Marks the Spot: Retriggering Experience X Through a Visual Arts Practice’ ;
examining how art can facilitate connections with place. Clare has a studio in North
Shields where she paints, draws and runs classes for adults of all abilities keen to
develop and explore their own artwork.
