After spending a number of years developing a practice of abstract painting ~I’ve returned to making pictures from observation. I use mixed media – pencil, charcoal, soft pastel, acrylic paint and collage – to create work initially from observation whether it be landscape or still life before allowing it to take on a life of its own.

Maureen Stephenson – Artist Statement

I’ve been passionate about the natural landscape for as long as I can remember and to successfully capture the essence of a place into a two-dimensional painting is totally absorbing. The majority of my paintings are based on actual scenes. I make no apology for using a camera as light is ephemeral and if something appeals then at least I’ve got an initial picture to work with. From this initial starting point I can crop and distort the image to develop the work as I want. Oil and acrylic are my preferred media on canvas, paper or mountboard. Reflections in water, clouds, landscape, gardens and flowers are my main subject matter.

Elizabeth Talbot – Artist Statement

My interest lies primarily in the potential of landscape drawing and painting to express feeling and mood. I am drawn especially to trees and woodland. I take inspiration from looking and being in the outdoors but I don’t seek to represent particular locations. Rather, I am interested in creating a balance between conveying atmospheric qualities and reflecting the complexity of natural forms.

I feel free to use a range of source materials including observation, photographs and invention. My process is one of gradually building up each drawing or painting mark by mark, layer by layer to arrive at a final image. My methods include occasional mono-printing and collage and for materials I generally use oils, acrylics, pastels, charcoal and inks.
